Causes and Treatment of WrinklesThere is one thing that no one can avoid: that is aging. As we grow older, our skin droops and wrinkles start appearing, with furrows and lines. The effect of aging on the skin depends on your skin type.

But there are new developments in science and medicine that are available for combating wrinkles and facial distortions.

Causes of wrinkles

The effect of the sun can lead to the occurrence of wrinkles on the face. The sun causes the dermis to thicken irregularly due to loss of water. Smoking also lead to the development of wrinkles. Muscle movement on the face is also responsible for wrinkles. As people smile and frown, lines develop on their face.

Treatment

There are different types of treatment available for wrinkles. Some of them are listed below.

There are topical agents which helps the skin to produce collagen. Some of these are Vitamin A acids such as Tretinoin, Tazarotene and Adapelene, and Vitamin C. There are also injectable fillers like Restylane and Botox®.

Lasers can also be used to remove the top layer of the skin so that a new skin can grow in place. There are some disadvantages of this method even though the result is impressive.

First, the healing time is quite long; and second, it changes the tone of the skin – people with dark skin end up having darker skin and fair skin becomes whiter sometimes.

Newer laser treatments that are non-ablative with shorter durations of healing and offering higher degrees of improvement are being developed. There are also plastic surgery techniques that can improve the skin making the wrinkles and lines vanish.

Prevention

The best thing to do is to prevent the development of wrinkles. This could be done by the following suggestions. Avoiding spending too much time in the sun is necessary. If you have to spend time in the sun you can use a sunscreen.

Avoid habits like smoking and drinking of alcohol. It is also important to avoid second hand smoke. Smoking in all it forms contributes a lot to the development of facial lines.

Make regular exercise a part of your life as this leads to a general improvement in health. Make use of moisturizers because they improve the moisture holding capacity of the skin. It is also important to drink enough water for internal rehydration.
